No problem - credit goes to Stack Overflow. I normally try not to post too much content that is from other sites/blogs, but occasionally something really useful shows up like that.

Thank you for posting this on your blog! I wasn't looking for this specifically but it was something that bugged me often. I don't think I ever would have thought of that.

Cheers

Yes, but all you need to do to revert the "install" is to delete the folder and remove the registry entries.

Ideally, yes, and if you can work out a way to do it in a single transaction, that would be better. However, I was really just focusing on the problem and a workaround. It isn't a perfect workaround, but the risk of failure between the 2 transactions is fairly small, and in the case of the system that I was working on, the consequences are not so severe.

Hi,

You solved this problem by breaking the circular reference in two operations. But don't you need a transaction for these two operations? I mean, to treat these operation as one operation only?

Thanks,

Adriano

You are the man, I've been looking for a fix for this since last month's upgrade to Win7 and SQL 2008. It has been driving me insane having to remote into the database server just to use SSMS. We're using Vault 3.1.9 and had the same issues. Crazy I was looking for it today, and you posted this just today.

Very well explained, thank you very much for posting this. It helped me to solve my problem.

I just have a suggestion/alternative way about step 2, for checking if entity already exists.
If you don't have identity field to check for ID, then in general always could do:

Instead of: 'If ID=0'

Could do: 'if (DataContext.Table.GetOriginalEntityState(item) == null)'

Actually, the point was that even though Windows 2000 is pretty old, it can handle most of the stuff that .NET 3.5 will do, which means that you can use .NET 3.5 (fairly new stuff) on it. I'm sorry if you don't like me posting entries about this, but frankly it is the most popular topic in terms of readership and if you don't like it, no one is asking you to read it. I have plenty of other blog posts on other topics that you can read if you want.
